Crystal System: trigonal
Colour: yellowish-brown to greyish-brown, pale yellow to tannish, grey, brown, green, red, black and sometimes nearly colourless; tarnished iridescent at times
Lustre: vitreous, silky, pearly
Habitus: common in rhombohedral crystals; other forms are rare. It occurs also in fibrous, spherulitic, cleavable, and fine-grained aggregates
Hardness: 3½ - 4½
Fracture: irregular/uneven, conchoidal
Cleavage: perfect on {10-11}
Density: 3.932 g/cm3 
Origin and geological occurrence: siderite is common in hydrothermal veins associated with fluorite, baryte, galena and sphalerite. It can be found in sedimentary deposits deriving from oxygen-poor continental water associated with clay and coal.
