Origin and geological occurrence: it belongs to the pyroxene group and could be considered as a sub-calcic member of the diopside-hedenbergite series. Augite is found in mafic and ultramafic igneous rocks, in some high-grade metamorphic rocks and in metamorphosed iron formations.
